The town came to prominence in the 16th century with the construction of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth, which, according to local legend, began after a hermit discovered an image of Our Lady of Nazareth in a nearby cave and became an important pilgrimage centre. The tradition of Our Lady of Nazareth as the protector of fishermen and sailors is deeply rooted in the local culture. Over the centuries, Nazaré has transformed from a quiet fishing village into a famous tourist destination, known for its impressive beaches and the rugged ocean that attracts surfers from all over the world, especially for the giant waves, which are a global spectacle. The city combines historic charm and religious devotion with vibrant coastal life, reflecting an evolution that preserves its traditions while embracing modern tourism.
